the original
The first dancing hula girl lamps started appearing in the 1940s. The lamps were originally made by the Dodge Company in Chicago (the Dodge company also used to make Oscar and Emmy awards). The original lamps were cast in brittle pot metal and finished in bronze.

While the companies that produced the original hula girl motion lamps are no longer in business – and the lamps no longer available – I set out to create the world’s most authentic replicas.
After years of research, I was able to find a retired mold maker who still had part of the original mold. He taught me the painstaking process of how the lamp was cast, finished and assembled. No detail was spared – from picking four slightly different color silk threads for the hula skirt, to custom-designing a pattern for the weave, every part of the lamp is as close to the original as possible.
Each lamp is hand-cast, triple-plated for the highest quality, then coated in an antique patina. The only upgrade is on the inside. An engineering team improved the design of the original motor to provide years of quiet enjoyment.

Our hula girl motion lamps are created using old-world traditions.
Standing 24″ tall, Hula Girl Motion Lamps are fully cast in metal, then hand-plated in a high-quality antique copper finish, giving each lamp a unique and elegant patina. The lamp shade has been updated with a natural fiber raffia. A three-way control switch allows independent control of the light bulb and hula skirt motion.
